Projects: South Texas Project 3&4 The Advantages of the STP Site
The South Texas Project site is an existing nuclear power generation site and offers a number of strategic benefits for new nuclear construction. These advantages directly reduce capital construction costs for a new-build nuclear project. The STP site is regarded as one of the top sites in the country for nuclear development.
Advantages include:
Existing Infrastructure
Because the 12,200 acre site was initially designed to accommodate four nuclear reactors, units 3&4 will utilize pre-existing infrastructure, including the 7,000 acre main cooling reservoir, heavy haul road and barge slip. The use of more than 200 modules per unit to reduce construction duration, costs and rework.
Existing Water Rights
The new units will use the existing water rights already secured by STP. Also, no new cooling water intake systems or reservoir discharge systems are required.
Existing Transmission System
STP 3&4 will connect into an existing transmission system that will need few upgrades or modifications and minimal additional transmission infrastructure costs.
Proximity to Demand
The site is well situated to serve the growing electric demands of Houston, San Antonio and Austin, which are among the cities with the highest U.S. population growth rates.
Access to a Skilled Workforce
The project will create up to 5,500 jobs at the peak of construction. The availability of skilled construction craft working along the industrial Gulf Coast makes this site well positioned to attract the workforce necessary to build the project. An alliance with local universities and colleges is already hard at work developing the operating force of the future, training local residents seeking high-paying, professional jobs.
Strong Local Support
STP 3&4 has received demonstrated, significant support at the local and state levels. Matagorda County, Texas, and the cities of Bay City and Palacios as well as statewide elected officials are on record with respect to their support of STP 3&4.
Minimal Environmental Impacts
The site poses no conflicts with dedicated land use areas, nor land planning programs and no adverse impacts of land use to the environment, recreation, or special purposes.
